How much lighting do I need?
For a room measuring 12 feet by 16 feet. 12 x 16 equals 192. If the room has an 8-foot ceiling, the multiplication factor is .15. If the room’s ceiling is higher than 8 feet, your multiplier is 2.5. 192 x “multiplication factor” = amount of watts required. Ex: 192 x 1.5 = 288 watts. If your chandelier uses 60 watts bulbs, 288 / 60 = 4.8 therefore you need a minimum of 5 chandelier bulbs.
How do I determine the proper chandelier for a stairwell or entrance?
If your entrance measures 12 feet by 16 feet, add up both measurements and you get 28. Therefore, a diameter of 28 inches. The bottom of the chandelier should always be at least 7 feet off the floor.
What is the best way to illuminate an entrance?
On ceilings or semi-ceilings, it is best to have a light fixture every 8 to 10 feet. For a long entrance to cover, you can add wall sconces every 6 to 8 feet and 60 inches off the ground.
How do I determine the proper size chandelier for a dining table?
The bottom of the chandelier should be at least 30 inches from the table. Use the phrase “How much light do I need” to determine the quantity of watts you need. Take the width of your table and subtract 12” to determine the maximum width of the chandelier, the minimum width should be half the width of the table. You can add recessed lighting to add emphasis on a painting, decorative object or furniture.
How high should I install the chandelier above the dining table?
The ideal elevation is 30 to 36 inches above the table. The measurement comes from calculating the distance between the lowest point of the chandelier and the top of the table.
How high should I install a suspended light above the island?
The ideal elevation is 34 to 36 inches above the island. As with a dining room chandelier, the measurement comes from the lowest point of the suspended light and the top of the island.
What is the minimum clearance needed for a fixture in a circulation space?
For an 8-foot ceiling, the light fixture should be 15″ tall, which allows a 6’9″ clearance. For a 9-foot ceiling, the light fixture should be 24″ tall at most, which allows a 7 foot clearance.
How do I maintain my fabric lampshades?
The only safe way to clean a fabric lampshade is to use a vacuum and a brush with long bristles.
How to choose the right lights for an exterior door?
Lights must be installed 66 inches from the ground in front of the door. The size of the light fixture must be between 1/5 and 1/6 of the entrance’s height.
Rules for recessed lights.
The recessed lights must be installed at least 18 inches from the walls. Distance required between the various recessed lights: MR-16 One in every 4 to 6 feet. PAR-20 One in every 3 to 4 feet. GU-10 One in every 2 to 3 feet. In a kitchen, recessed lights in front of cabinets should be 6 inches from them. Recessed lights should always be directed towards the walls to provide indirect lighting.
What fan size is recommended for my room?
For the best efficiency and comfort, it is necessary to choose the fan in accordance to the room. Diameter is key. A fan too small or too large may look odd. A fan that’s too small will not move enough air and one that’s too large could overwhelm the room. We suggest the following formats: Large Room – for a room of 225 square feet (15′x 15′) or more, use a fan with a diameter of 50″, 52″, 54″ or 56″. Average room – for a room of 144 square feet (12′x 12′), use a fan with a diameter of 42″ or 44″. Small room – For a room of 64 square feet (8′x 8′) use a fan with a diameter of 32″.
Room size Diameter
64 ft2 32″
144 ft2 42″
225 ft2 44″
400 ft2 52″
How does a fan cool a room?
A fan cools the room by creating a breeze. It does not reduce the room temperature. The breeze effect makes you feel cooler by speeding evaporation of perspiration on the skin. It’s the same sensation as when you open the window of a moving car. A fan in a room where the temperature is 80 degrees will give the impression that it is 72 degrees with the breeze effect. When used with air conditioning, a fan reduces operating costs since the air conditioning can be adjusted at a higher temperature.
How does a fan warm a room?
In winter, a fan can help reduce energy consumption up to 10%. The air temperature in a heated room varies in layers; the air near the ceiling is warmer than the air near the floor because hot air rises. A fan can help push back the layers of hot air and thus “de-stratify” the air. As a result, the warm air is re-circulated, and the heating system does not work as hard to warm the room. To effectively “de-stratify” the room, the fan should rotate clockwise. This will push air against the ceiling then down along the walls and thus allow it to circulate without creating a breeze.
What rotation should be used during summer and winter?
Summer: counterclockwise (from the top to the left).
Winter: clockwise (from the top to the right).
How much can I expect to save on heating and air conditioning costs?
A fan can generate savings throughout the whole year. A fan can have you save up to 40% in cooling costs and up to 10% on heating in winter. During the winter the fan will move the hot air that is stuck to the ceiling. This is especially true in rooms with cathedral ceilings. Savings will vary depending on local climate and electricity costs.
Can I add a light kit to my fan?
Most modern fans offer this option. The light kit is installed under the fan and requires a very simple electrical installation. However, the installation may vary from one company and one model to another. Not all light kits are interchangeable; they are specific to each company.
What rod size should I use?
The general rule for calculating the size of the rod is: ceiling height in feet minus 9′ = length of rod. This rule considers a distance of 8 feet between the ceiling and fan. If the ceiling is 12 feet high, the rod will be a maximum length of 3 feet to position the fan 8 feet from the ground. Of course, the fan can be positioned higher if necessary. However, the fan shouldn’t be lowered too much. It will be more effective by being closer to the ceiling than to the floor. If it’s too low it will lose some of its effectiveness.
What is the blade pitch?
The blade pitch is the angle of the blade from the ground. Quality fans usually have a pitch of 12 to 14 degrees. Fans of lower quality will have a pitch of 8 to 10 degrees. The greater the pitch means the greater the pressure that the blade applies and the greater the volume of air being pushed down. That’s why fans of lesser quality give the impression of creating a tornado but when we’re below it we can barely feel anything. The best way to judge is always to try the fan.
My ceiling is angled; can I still install a fan?
Most fans are able to accommodate an inclination of 30 degrees. Most manufacturers offer adapters that can accommodate up to 45 degrees.
Can I use a fan outdoors?
Manufacturers offer a selection of outdoor fans. The terms “damp location” and “wet location” are then used. A fan with the name “damp location” may be used for humid environments, while a “wet location” fan may be used in more extreme conditions.
How to determine what kind of hood is required?
The hood should be selected according to room size and type of stove. To achieve an efficient performance, the hood should be able to renew the air in the kitchen about 10 times per hour. Here is an example of CMF required, approximately, depending on the size of the room with an 8 foot ceiling: 10′ x 10′ = 200 CMF, 12′ x 12′ = 300 CMF, 15′ x 15′ = 450 CMF. The other factor to consider is the type of stove. Gas stoves require a flow rate of 1 CMF per 100 BTU. The unit of measurement BTU is used to determine the heating speed of the stove in relation to the gas flow.
What is the best way to clean the surface of a stove hood?
Exterior: The stainless steel hoods should be cleaned regularly using a rag or a clean cloth soaked in warm water and mild soap or dish detergent. Rinse with clean water and dry immediately. Always wipe in the direction of squall lines (direction of polishing). You can also apply oil used to polish furniture to accent the glossy finish. For painted hoods, regular cleaning will protect the surfaces. Avoid using any products containing bleach or abrasives to clean your hood. As the latter is installed above a stove, the chemicals that are found in cleaning products can react to heat and damage the painted surface. Fan: Remove the fan wheel and admission ring and wash them in dishwasher as needed.
How often should I clean the filters?
The aluminium filters, Micromesh and Micromesh de luxe, can be cleaned in the dishwasher about once a month, depending on frequency of use. NOTE: Some minerals in contact with additives of dishwasher detergent can cause discoloration of the filters. This discoloration is not covered by warranty. They should be cleaned more often if your cooking style generates a higher level of fat (frying or wok cooking).
Can I replace a microwave with built-in hood with a hood?
Yes. Whether your current system is equipped with an exhaust vent or not, we offer a complete line of stove hoods that will ventilate the cooking surface efficiently.
When should I replace the charcoal filter of my module?
We recommend replacing the charcoal filter once a year or as needed, depending on use.
What is best? With or without vent?
Ideally, the stove hoods should always be installed with a pipe outside the house. If our hood cannot be installed with a vent exhausting air outside, a charcoal filter module must be installed. NOTE: It is sometimes impossible to install a hood with a charcoal filter, check with the company to confirm.
Can I exhaust the air of my stove hood into the attic, roof or wall?
No. You should never exhaust air into the attic, ceilings, crawl spaces or garages. The moisture could damage the structure and insulation of your home.
What type of vent is more appropriate to exhaust the air out of a stove hood?
Stove hoods should exhaust the air outside using a metal vent. If you have a choice between a flexible metal vent and metal vent with smooth walls, choose the latter. The stripes of flexible metal vent create turbulence and reduce the airflow. Never use a dryer vent of 4 inches (101.6 mm) or a plastic pipe. The minimum allowed size for a vent is 3 ¼ inches by 10 inches (82.55 mm x 254 mm), equivalent to 6 inches in diameter (152.4 mm). The most powerful hoods require larger vents of up to 10 inches in diameter (254 mm). Refer to the hood specifications to make your choice. If you change or replace your hood or your stove, do NOT use a vent size smaller than the size specified for the hood. Reducing the size of the vent directly affects the performance of the hood.
What is the minimum vent size for a stove hood?
3¼ inches by 10 inches or 6 inches in diameter for round vents.
What is the maximum length of the vent in my hood?
For optimum performance, make sure you have a short, straight vent. 45 degree bends are preferable to 90 degree bends. Make sure you use a wall or roof cap. If you have any doubts, seek a qualified installer in ventilation or contact our technical service.
What does CMF and sone rates mean?
CMF means the exhaust air flow in cubic feet per minute. The more CMF, the higher the flow of exhaust air is. The sone is an internationally recognized unit of measurement for noise. Taken in the laboratory, that measure reflects the best what a human can hear. If you double the number of sones, you double the intensity of noise (i.e. if you have a device that makes two sones and another who made four sones, then the second unit is twice as noisy as the first). One sone is equivalent to the noise that would make a quiet refrigerator in a quiet kitchen.
What do we consider to be a normal setting?
The setting “low” is considered normal.
How many CMF do I need for my stove or my cooktop?
For electric and gas stoves or cooktops, we offer a complete line of hoods that can meet your cooking needs through specific characteristics. For gas stoves or cooktops, a minimum ventilation rate of 1 CMF per 100 BTU is recommended.
How high should I position my hood over my stove?
Most common installations require a gap of 20 to 24 inches (50.8 to 60.96 cm) between the bottom of the hood and the top of the cooktop. For fans of higher capacity, the distance between the cooking surface and the bottom of the hood should be between 24 and 30 inches (60.96 to 76.2 cm) unless instructions to the contrary in the case of a type specific hood.
